Rotary Scrapers

The Rotary Scraper line of tools intended use is for the preparation of polyethylene pipe prior to performing an electrofusion.

All Rotary Scraper tools peel a “ribbon” of oxidized polyethylene material off of the pipe to expose the virgin material beneath the surface. This booklet will help you understand the safety, functionality, and maintenance for the Rotary Scraper line of tools.

It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure the tool is functioning properly and that proper electrofusion protocols are followed.

OPERATING AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS

1. OPERATIONAL CHECKLIST

Prior to using your Rotary Scraper tool, verify the following parameters;

  • Make sure the entire tool is free of loose dirt and grease
  • Verify that spring loaded latch assembly open and closes freely
  • The blade and blade housing should be free of dirt
  • The blade housing is spring loaded and should move in and out freely

NOTE – If any of the aforementioned items fail, do not use the tool, take corrective action

2. PIPE PREPARATION PRIOR TO SCRAPING

Prior to installing a Rotary Scraper Tool make sure the pipe has been properly prepared.

  • Take care to remove enough soil around the circumference
of the pipe to spin the tool freely.
  • Wipe excess soil, dirt, mud, water, or other contaminants
from the pipe using a clean cloth
  • Remove or “pop out” any small stones or miscellaneous
debris that may be embedded in the pipe from directional
    drilling applications
  • The pipe end should be cut square

3. INSTALLING A ROTARY SCRAPER SCRAPER

Before you install your Rotary Scraper, verify that your tool is appropriately sized for the pipe you are about to scrape.

  • Open the tool by releasing spring loaded latch
  • Orient the tool for the proper direction of travel by using the
arrows on the upper head of the tool
  • For couplings, align the blade so it is resting half on and half
off the pipe end. For tees and saddles, align the blade just
outside your marks on the pipe.
  • Close the tool around the pipe taking care to sink the alignment
pin between the two halves if the tool is equipped with
an alignment pin. Fasten the spring loaded latch.
  • The tool is secure when all rollers are in contact with the pipe,
the spring loaded latch is locked down, and the blade housing
    is slightly compressed.

4. OPERATING A ROTARY SCRAPER

Once the tool is installed properly, you can start to scrape

  • Rotate the scraper around the pipe, following the directional
arrow on top of the blade housing
  • Move the scraper in a smooth, consistent manner
  • Do not apply lateral force to the tool. It is designed to “walk”
down the pipe on its’ own.
  • Verify the ribbon is even and complete throughout operation
  • Refer to the table below for proper ribbon (swarf) thickness

When the blade of the tool has traveled over the entire area to be scraped, remove the tool from the pipe by releasing spring loaded latch, open tool and lift away from pipe.

5. CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Your tool should be checked at every use for visible wear and tear. Although many of these items are covered in the operating instructions, the following list of items will assist in keeping your tools operating properly.

  • Is the tool clean and free of foreign material? (dirt, excess grease, etc…)
    – Clean with compressed air, a clean rag, or a light soap/water solution
    – Allow tool to dry completely before using
    – Apply a light coat of grease to blade housing, away from the blade
  • Are all of the rollers secured. Does the spring loaded latch function properly?
Does the blade housing still have spring to it?

Annual Maintenance

Once per year your tool should be tested on a piece of pipe for proper performance. The end user can conduct this maintenance or you can call PERC to schedule maintenance.Items to cover are as follows;

  • All aforementioned items in care and maintenance
  • Scraper must be peeling one continuous ribbon of material
  • Scraper should not be skipping
  • Ribbon width may vary slightly, but ribbon thickness should be .007-.012

Blade Replacement/Rotation

The blades are 4 sided and can be rotated if they become dull. The procedure for rotation and replacement is the same.

  • Remove the blade screw with a torx #T15 driver
  • Remove blade from blade housing and rotate or replace
  • Insert the blade into the blade housing
  • Start threading in the blade screw
  • Press and hold the blade upward into the blade housing with your thumb
  • Gently tighten the blade screw

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE BLADE SCREW. OVERTIGHTENING MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE
TO THE BLADE HOUSING AND CAUSE THE SCRAPER TO SKIP

6. REPLACEMENT PARTS (same for all sizes)
